Abnormal Uterine Bleeding refers to excessive or prolonged menstruation that might be a sign of any chronic condition or fertility issues that needs immediate medical intervention.
Uterine bleeding is considered abnormal under the following circumstances:
- Bleeding more than 7 days
- Bleeding after sex
- Spotting or bleeding between menstruation
- Bleeding after the stage of menopause
- Irregular periods and menstrual cycles
- Not experiencing periods for a period of 3 to 6 months
A series of acute episodes of bleeding and other reasons like medications, pregnancy history, family health history, major surgical procedures, and other serious past or present illnesses can contribute to abnormal bleeding, thereby resulting in the intervention of a healthcare provider.
The examination of the cervix, the pelvis, blood, thyroid, hormonal levels, a biopsy of the uterine lining, and the pap smear screening test are usually performed to identify the exact cause of the bleeding.
The condition can be treated with surgeries as well as medications. Some prominent surgeries include the removal of fibroids, Endometrial ablation, and Hysteroctomy. Hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus and can be done with the help of laparoscopy. Removal of the uterus depends on the patient’s age and other factors and is mostly considered the final resort to stop bleeding.
