What is IVF?
Global birth rates have been steadily falling in the past 10 years. This has led to an increase in infertility treatment options. Today, over 60% of women between the ages of 35 and 40 are trying to get pregnant using fertility treatments.
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedure where sperm and egg are fertilized outside the human body. Owing to technological advances, it has become a much easier process today than earlier. As a leading provider of advanced medical care, Firm Hospitals offers the chance for parents to conceive their own bundle of joy.
But first, let us explain to you how IVF works step by step for your understanding.
5 step procedure for IVF in Chennai
1. Superovulation – Boosting Egg Production
The first step of IVF is called superovulation, also referred to as stimulation. Medication containing Follicle Stimulating Hormones is administered, which directs your body to produce more eggs. It is done to increase the chance of success during fertilization during the process.
We will monitor all your vitals during this process, including transvaginal ultrasounds and blood tests, to ensure that your hormone levels are healthy.
2. Removing the Eggs
We will schedule a hormone injection before the eggs are ready to be retrieved. This will help the eggs mature quickly. Once this is done, you will need to undergo Follicular Aspiration to remove the eggs. The doctor uses an ultrasound machine to guide a thin needle to your ovaries to extract the egg.
It is a minor surgical procedure, and you don’t have to be alarmed. While it does sound painful, you don’t have to worry at all – at Firm Hospitals, we have the best doctors in Chennai. They can administer the right medication to make the process completely painless.
3. Collecting Donor Sperm
During the previous process, we also carry out sperm sample collection. Your partner or donor sperm needs to be collected. The collected sample is then put through a process that enables us to find the healthiest sperm cells.
4. Combining Eggs and Sperm
Most people think of this part of the process when they say IVF. The collected eggs and sperm cells are combined to be fertilized. This process is called insemination. There are two ways doctors choose to do this, depending on the fertilization rate.
The first is IVF, where the egg is kept near the sperm on a petri dish and the sperm gets inside the egg on its own. The other method is when the sperm is directly injected into the egg, called Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).
5. Transferring Embryo to Uterus
Once the above procedure is completed, you will receive medication that is meant to prepare your uterus to receive the embryo that will be transferred to you. About 5 days after insemination, the embryo is transferred to your uterus. Multiple embryos are transferred to improve the chances of conceiving.
This process is simple and can be done without putting you under anesthesia. The doctors get this done with a catheter, which is not painful or uncomfortable. Once all this is done, you’re free to go home. Firm hospitals recommend you wait for at least 2 weeks before you take your pregnancy test.
